United Way

The United Way is a worldwide network of charitable organizations working at the community level to improve the quality of life in each chapter’s specific community. After assessing the specific needs of a local community, the local chapter directs their resources toward what will help people the most in that local community. For various communities, this can mean different things; a certain chapter may devote their efforts towards assisting the elderly, another chapter may emphasize youth education, while another may work towards attaining a reliable clean water source for their community.

United Way got its beginning in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, when a group of religious leaders saw a need to address local welfare issues. The following year, the Charity Organizations Society, as it was called then, was successful in raising over twenty thousand dollars to go towards the needs of the poor in their community. More of these community-oriented organizations sprang up from coast to coast, and became known as 'Community Chests.' Today, the United Way is a worldwide organization that commonly receives over one billion dollars a year in donations that conducts missions ranging from helping children in the local community, to providing disaster relief in times of need worldwide.

One of United Way’s goals is to reduce the dropout rate of high school students. United Way is implementing a plan that involves uniting communities with their local schools, and schools with the families of students. This is being done in a manner which facilitates the needs of the local schools being met by members of the community, including the use of literacy volunteers in the classroom, and by promoting strong family involvement in reinforcing the needs of their specific child’s education.

United Way is also front-and-center on many other issues affecting local communities, such as giving individuals the tools and skills they need to help them attain financial stability. They are also working to tackle some of our toughest health issues, such as by setting a 10-year goal to increase, by one third, the number of children and adults in America who are healthy and avoid risky behaviors.

One way to donate to your local chapter of the United Way is through car donations. Many local United Way chapters use donateacar.com as their avenue of receiving funding from car donations. To see if your local United Way chapter is affiliated with this organization, visit their website at:

Check in the drop-down box to see if your local agency is listed. If not, you may want to contact your local United Way chapter to find out if they accept car donations, and, if so, though what means you can do so. Of course, United Way will also welcome a cash donation if your local chapter does not accept car donations.
