Salvation Army

Back in 1852, Mr. William Booth began his career as a Christian minister in England. His mission was to reach the poor, hungry and homeless people on the streets of London with the gospel message. Taking the unusual approach of bringing the gospel to the streets as opposed to bringing people to church, Mr. Booth and his wife, Catherine, are responsible for bringing thousands upon thousands of people to know Jesus Christ.

After his initial success, Mr. Booth’s organization only continued to grow. Many of the people on Booth’s team were actually some of the converts that had been positively changed forever though this group’s message.

The Salvation Army was originally known as “The Christian Mission”, but after seeing his organization described as a ‘volunteer army’, Mr. Booth substituted the words with ‘salvation army,’ and the organization’s new title was born. As the years went on, members of the Salvation Army ventured to the far ends of the globe, often facing persecution, and sometimes even death, as they strived to bring peace and hope to the needy around the world.

Today, the Salvation Army continues its worldwide mission. This Christian organization provides an impressive number of services to people of all walks and ages. They run an anti-pornography campaign, and conduct missing person searches. Their SAWSO (Salvation Army World Service Office) organization works in underdeveloped countries around the globe to provide the people of these countries with the tools, training and resources they need to lift themselves up from poverty.

Through the generosity of Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, the Salvation Army as been able to dedicate nearly 2 billion dollars towards the construction of comprehensive community centers all across the United States. When complete, this project is expected to create a total of 25 community centers across the country, offering everything from ice arenas to rock-climbing walls and performing arts theatres inside, and providing a positive recreation and learning experience for the children and families touched by these centers.

Some of the many other missions carried out by the Salvation Army include services for veterans, disaster relief, prisoner rehabilitation, a mission to combat human trafficking, youth camps and elderly services, to name a very few. This is truly an organization that positively touches so many lives, in so many places, in so many ways, and has done so for well over a century.
