National Kidney Foundation

Over a half century ago, the Committee for Nephrosis Research held its first meeting. This organization led to the founding of the National Nephrosis Foundation, which eventually gave way to the formation of the National Kidney Foundation in 1964. The organization’s main missions early on included helping victims of kidney disease and their families, raising awareness of the general public about kidney disease, and raising money to fund research that would lead to advancements in the treatment of kidney disease.

In 1964, with the breakthrough invention of the Teflon Shunt, everything changed for those with kidney issues. This meant that kidney failure no longer had to be a fatal threat… those with kidney failure could now receive regular treatment through dialysis. The transplant of kidneys from siblings to a family member in need was also proving to be a successful technique.

Over the years, as the National Kidney Foundation proved its worth again and again, it gained much respect from both the public and those in government. As such, the NKF became more of a voice for progress and legislation in this critical area of need. They became, and remain, an essential force in areas such as the advancement of kidney disease detection, kidney disease treatment, and public education on the subject of kidney disease.

In 1983, the National Kidney Foundation launched an effort known as “Kidney Cars.” Through Kidney Cars, the NKF began accepting car donations as a method for the public to provide much-needed funds for their organization. Since that time, the NKF says they have accepted car, truck, and boat donations from well over one-half million people, now averaging over 100 donations per day.
