Habitat For Humanity
Habitat For Humanity was formed in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Their mission is to provide simple, decent housing for families in need. Contrary to what you might believe, Habitat for Humanity does not give away the homes they build -- the new homeowners are required to make a down payment followed by monthly mortgage payments, and also put in hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" on their home, alongside a host of volunteers. Then, the mortgage payments made by the new homeowners are used to build new homes elsewhere.
Although Habitat For Humanity is a Christian organization, they do not discriminate on any basis as to who receives assistance. Factors that do play a part in the selection of recipients include their willingness to become a part of the volunteer program, and their ability to repay the loan.
President Jimmy Carter is well-known for his dedication and first-hand support of Habitat For Humanity's mission. To date, Habitat For Humanity reports that they have built over 350,000 houses around the world, providing over 1.75 million people in 3,000 communities with a new lease on life through the blessing of a decent home.
Habitat For Humanity is yet another excellent program that benefits from car donations. Car donations for Habitat For Humanity are processed by Advanced Remarketing Services, Inc. They accept all types of vehicle donations, including cars, trucks, boats, RVs, farm and construction equipment, and aircraft, regardless of whether the donated vehicle is running.
