Goodwill

Goodwill got its beginning in 1902, when a Methodist minister in Boston began collecting household goods and clothing from the wealthier members of the city in an effort to provide for the poor. He then hired and trained the needy to make necessary repairs to these items, and would either resell them or give the items to those who repaired them. From there, Goodwill grew to be a 3.2 billion dollar nonprofit organization that has helped millions of people in the United States and Canada to lead better lives.

Just like in its earlier days, one of Goodwill’s primary missions is putting people to work. Goodwill accomplishes this by providing customized job training, employment placement and other services, provided through its network of community-based offices. In fact, in 2009 alone Goodwill reports that they helped over 1.9 million people train for careers in fields such as information technology, banking, and health care. The people Goodwill assists come from all walks of life, and include everyone from youth to senior citizens.

Goodwill also operates thrift stores from which anyone can purchase donated items. The proceeds from sales of goods goes directly back into Goodwill’s employment assistance programs, helping those in need acquire the tools and skills they need to both provide for themselves and be a meaningful part of their communities. Goodwill is very efficient in turning your donation into services for the community, and reports that about 84 percent of donations go directly into employment and training programs provided.

Many local Goodwill agencies will accept your vehicle donation. If you’d like to make a difference for an agency that is helping people to stand on their own two feet by gaining meaningful employment, Goodwill is a good option. You can learn more about donating your vehicle to Goodwill by checking with your local Goodwill agency, or by visiting Goodwill’s Donation Acceptance Guidelines page, listed below.
