American Diabetes Association
The American Diabetes Association is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by diabetes. The ADA is the nation’s leading 501 (c )3 charity working to fight diabetes. Over the years they have done so by funding research to prevent, cure, and manage diabetes They are also a credible source depended upon by the public for information about diabetes, and work at the community level to deliver needed services related to issues surrounding diabetes.
Founded in 1940 as a scientific and medical organization, the American Diabetes Association now has over 400,000 members, 800 full-time staff, and more than 18,000 health professional members. ADA’s Strategic Plan for years 2008-2011 addresses, among other things, the acceleration of new methods working towards the cure of diabetes, and removing roadblocks that prevent access to quality healthcare.
Other objectives of the ADA include eliminating discrimination of those affected by diabetes in the workplace, schools, and other environments, and enhancing their efforts to inform/educate the public about the effects of diabetes. ADA is also working to make the public aware of the value of early detection of diabetes.
According to the ADA, every 21 seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes. Many others are suffering from diabetes and don’t even know it. The American Diabetes Association is committed to serving those with diabetes, educating the public about the benefits of early diabetes detection, and working towards advancing the treatment and cure of diabetes.
